Endocrine diseases, with the example of diabetes, have imposed a huge tax on our society and will be worse in the next decades. With a prevalence of 10% of population with diabetes soon, both health professionals and regular population cannot ignore this issue. At least 1/3 of hospitalized patients have diabetes, which means, no matter which specialty you are in, you have to deal with diabetes. Osteoporosis is much more common in older women then people think, it causes severe damage to life quality at late age. Please join us at the Bridge conference with excellent speakers from New England to explore measures to battle these common problems.

Psychiatric Diseases
Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the US. However, Asian Americans have the lowest rates of utilization of mental health services among all ethnic populations. This underrepresentation is attributable to stigma over using services, conceptions of health and treatment that differ from those underlying Western medicine, cultural inappropriateness of services, and the use of alternative resources within the Asian American communities. The mental health session is provided by a panel of clinician-researchers who are experts in various mental disorders. Important topics to be covered during the session include: late life depression and dementia by Dr. Wendy Qiu from Boston University; diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder by Dr. Georgina Garcia from Children’s Hospital Boston; anxiety disorder and comorbid medical conditions by Dr. Liang Yuan from Tufts Medical School; schizophrenia and comorbid metabolic syndrome by Dr. Xiaoduo Fan from Massachusetts General Hospital.

Inflammation and Immunity
Broadly speaking, aberrant immune reaction and inflammation are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. In addition to its critical role in cancer surveillance and pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, alteration of host self-defense system underlies common symptoms, such as fever, skin rash, joint pain, diarrhea and bloody bowel movement. Joined by world leading experts in this field, the BMS Immunity and Inflammation session will focus on these common clinical issues, their underlying mechanisms and current and future management strategies. Among the distinguished speakers are: Dr. John Kao from University of Michigan, Drs. Vijay Yajnik and Dicken Ko from Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Jerry Zhu from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dr. Tony Ip from University of Massachusetts.

This will be followed by Dr. Julianne Ip, Associate Dean of Brown Medical School, who will speak on career advancement in medical school and residency training. The mentoring effort will be further enhanced by a talk on how to be successful in academic medicine by Dr. John Kao, Associate Director of GI training program at University of Michigan.

Development
The “Development” session explores not only the development from bench-side research to bed-side therapy, but also that from brilliant ideas to viable businesses. Moreover, we try to shed some light, and open the discussion, on the continuous development of the professionals in medicine and life sciences. In order to build bridges between “academia and industry”, “basic research and drug development”, “novel ideas and successful ventures”, “biotechnology and supporting fields such as Investment and Legal”, we have the honor to have recruited a stellar panel of speakers—including outstanding physicians who have traversed the fields of medicine and business, founders with life science background who have built successful businesses ranked among the “Inc. 500”, CEO’s and executives from biotech and pharma, as well as experts from the venture capital and legal communities.
