Technology transfer constitutes one of the most essential components in today’s biotechnology industry. Inventions made at the proof-of-concept stage in academic institutions are licensed to companies which then conduct additional research, clinical trials and, if successful, market distribution. The impact of this practice on economy is unprecedented. Under such environment, biologists are now facing new challenges to effectively identify transferrable results from their daily work and make them licensed. In addition, professionals who have a strong biology background and at the same time familiar with the US patent laws are extremely needed and valued by biotech companies. Patent agent/attorney is becoming an attractive alternative career pathway for biologists.
