You are invited to a HMS-CSSA and PDA joint Career Path seminar on March 6th given by Dr.Willard Dere, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Amgen (the largest biotech company in the US). He will share with us his career transition moments and leadership experience over the past 25 years working in Eli Lilly&Company and Amgen.

Dr. Willard H. Dere
Senior Vice President and International Chief Medical Officer at Amgen
In this role, Dr. Dere oversees the clinical development of Amgen’s pipeline candidates and marketed therapies in the international setting. Prior to his current position, Dr. Dere was senior vice president and corporate chief medical officer from Dec 2004 to Jan 2007. Dr. Dere joined Amgen in Jul 2003 as vice president of the inflammation and Bone Therapeutic Area.
Before joining Amgen, Dere worked at Eli Lilly & Company for 14 years, where he held a number of positions, most recently vice president, Medical; Endocrine, Bone and General Medicine Research and Development. In addition, since 1989 he has held an academic appointment at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was clinical associate professor, and hospital appointments in Indianapolis at Wishard Memorial Hospital and Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he has taught physical diagnosis and served as an attending physician in internal medicine.
A California native, Dr. Dere received his medical and undergraduate degrees from the University of California at Davis. He pursued clinical training at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals and the University of California at San Francisco Affiliated Hospitals. He was an assistant professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and held hospital appointments at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
While in academia, Dr. Dere received numerous teaching awards. More recently he has served on committees of several professional organizations, including the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research and the Group for Respect, Excellence and Ethics in Science. He has published over 60 articles and abstracts, and co-edited and authored a textbook in ambulatory care medicine.
