2018 marks the 40th Anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening-Up Policy. Shenzhen, the first Special Economic Zone which derived from this basic state policy witnessed a tremendous change of a costal fishing village morphing into a world leading science and technology driven metropolis of South China. With this historical background, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) – Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) seized its opportunity to thrived in the great wave of Shenzhen’s innovation adventure in science and technology.
Over the past 12 years, SIAT has earned an outstanding reputation for translating findings from basic research into industrial application under the efforts of the interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers. The wide-ranging expertise drawing from technical, engineering or science professions has now positioned SIAT at the interface between Biology Technologies (BT) and Information Technologies (IT) for the 21st century innovation.
Facing both challenges and opportunities of the new decade, SIAT proactively deploys frontier researches on Brain Research, Synthetic Biology and Advanced Electronic Materials. Furthermore, in order to maintain sufficient supplement of young researchers, SIAT has recently launched degree education composing bachelors, masters, doctorate and post-doctorate degrees, ensuring a sustainable competiveness.

Professor Fan received his B.S. degree from NanKai University in 1984, and received his PhD in Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1990. He worked at the Institute of Computing Technology from 1990 to 2006, where he served as Deputy Chief Engineer of National Research Center for Intelligent Computing Systems, Director of National Engineering Center on High Performance Computing and Deputy Director of the Institute of Computing Technology. Since 2006, he served as Director of SIAT-CAS.
His research interests include high performance computing, Grid computing, and computer architecture. He designed and developed a series supercomputer including Dawning I, Dawning 1000, Dawning 3000 and Dawning 4000. He has received many awards, such as outstanding award of CAS science and technology progress, first price of national science and technology progress, first price of Beijing science and technology progress, the outstanding young scientist of CAS, the national talent of New Century talent program and most recently honor, the Ambassador of Talents in Shenzhen.
He has actively participated in various professional activities. He served as editor of journal of integration technology, joint professor in Beijing Jiaotong University, council member of china digital library consultant committee, Advisor of 11th five years science and technology development plan of ministry of information industry, general chair of HPC China2007, GCC2008, PAKDD 2011, CNCC 2011, Fellow of CCF 2014, vice president of the Institute of talent research 2016.
